ASSOCIATION DEVELOPMENTS
1999
Organization/Officers
Marsha Dreier, AFRL Phillips Laboratory, serves as Chair of the Directors Group. Kay Krehbiel, New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, serves as Vice-Chair. David Myers, New Mexico State University continues as Secretary-Treasurer.
 
New Mexico Highlands University becomes an associate member of the Alliance.
 
Alliance holds strategic planning sessions in September and October and begins to develop a business plan, adopts a new Mission, Vision and Goal statement and changes its name to the Alliance for Innovation in Science and Technology Information.
Business/Budgets
Professional services contract with Karen Stoll is continued for an additional year.
 
David Myers files the Alliance federal tax return for the 1998 tax year.
 
Alliance develops a statement of Preferred vendor relations to use when negotiating for Alliance contracts.
 
Alliance Directors Group approves a dues increase for 2000. Dues for full members will be $5,000 and for associate members they will be $2,500.
 
Alliance agrees to employ a professional bookkeeping service to manage the Alliance's finances.
Publications/Presentations
1998 annual report is published electronically, on the Alliance web site. No paper copy is produced.

Scisearch
 
Social SciSearch® at LANL
Social SciSearch® at LANL, a sister database that uses the same interface and search engine as SciSearch® at LANL, is made available to LANL and UNM users. Social SciSearch® at LANL covers 1700 journals in disciplines such as economics, industrial relations, law, political science and other social sciences.
Biosis® at LANL
A new interface using Verity's Topic search engine is made available for BIOSIS® at LANL. The database has 12 million records covering the literature from 1969 to the present. BIOSIS indexes approximately 6500 journals and 2000 meetings/year, as well as books and other materials. 
INSPEC® at LANL
INSPEC® at LANL has a new interface and search engine, similar to that used for SciSearch at LANL. The INSPEC database has more than 6 million records covering the literature from 1969 to the present. INSPEC covers approximately 4,200 journals, 1000 conferences, and other publications.
 
Sandia National Laboratories, AFRL Laboratory Libraries and the Santa Fe Institute initiate a trial of the INSPEC® at LANL database and by year end are close to signing a contract with INSPEC.
Engineering Index® at LANL
Engineering Index® at LANL, using the same interface and search engine as the other LANL citation databases is available. Engineering Index contains over 4 million abstracts, covering the literature from 1969 to the present.
Electronic Journals
Full text of electronic journals are linked to citation databases including BIOSIS, INSPEC, Engineering Index, SocialSciSearch and DOE Energy databases.
 
More than 1100 Elsevier titles, back to 1995, are loaded on the LANL server and linked to citation databases.
 
University of Nevada, Reno signs an agreement with Elsevier for access to the electronic titles.
 
Donnie Curtis negotiates on behalf of the Alliance for access to Kluwer electronic journals through the LANL server. During contract negotiations, the libraries have access to the journals on a trial basis.
 
Alliance renews its contract with EiVillage for another three years. UNM, SNL and NMSU are Alliance subscribers.
 
Negotiations continue with the IOPP to allow loading the database on the LANL server, linking from citation databases to the IOPP content, and linking from NRL to IOPP content.
Other Products
A new version of Science Server® at LANL is released.  Science Server® at LANL is an electronic product that allows searching, manages content and delivers electronic journals to the desktop. The electronic content provided by Science Server® at LANL currently includes more than 1100 Elsevier Science titles. In the future journals from other publishers including Academic Press and Kluwer will be provided. 
Other Cooperative Initiatives
UNM Health Sciences Center Library begins participation in the Alliance Reciprocal Borrowing program.
