10 Trends that will Rock your Library World - New challenges are hitting the library world faster than a Kansas tornado
spins out cows. Discover how the speaker share his insights into which
ones are near and clear and which ones can take a more wait-and-see approach.
Some trends are technological but technology is just a tool. Some trends
are demographic and inevitable and some trends are cultural and economic
as globalization and barriers to connection evaporate.
Chips N Salsa - The Ibero-American Science &
Technology Consortium (ISTEC) "Chips-N-Salsa" portal /gateway
project addresses the information isolation and non interconnection frequently
found on online education portals. This is done by integrating content
into structured but flexible information maps and contextual databases.
It enables students to take advantage of the content, and turns the WEB
portal/gateway into a diligent information provider which orders the information
optimally for their particular needs. Similarly, it enables researchers
to have specific and accurate access to the most relevant information
in their research. This is achieved while establishing knowledge bases,
real-time peer review, and repositories for future work and long haul
ongoing projects. It also provides them with virtual labs and real-time
online publishing. Double indexing with full text index and metadata information,
and relating the content in a common structured metadata organization.
The flexible structure of the portal/gateway makes it ideal for institutions
willing to develop online curricula, incorporate research and development
results into the classroom, develop real-time specific and general education
and research communities, and deliver just-in-time material for life-long
initiatives.
Complexity, Ambiguity, and Uncertainty in Consortial
Relations - Consortial members are by nature diverse and represent
organizations whose visions and cultures may conflict with or at times
be incongruent with that of the consortium. Add to this mix interpersonal
relationships and the
changing nature of information work, one can see that complexity, ambiguity,
and uncertainty is often the prevailing environment for planning and decision
making. Consortia that aim to achieve transformational information products
and services face even greater challenges in turning themselves into creative
learning organizations. Natural systems offer some clues for new ways
of working. Principles derived from the study of complex adaptive systems
(CAS) and experiences with three different consortia will be used to illustrate
emerging consortial relations and speculate on how consortia such as AISTI
can make use of these ideas.
Developing Adaptable Strategies - In an age
of constant flux, organizational flexibility and adaptability are essential.
How does an organization effectively maintain its focus and direction
yet adapt to an ever-changing environment?
Information, Visualization, and the Library - The saying goes: "A picture is worth a thousand words." Whether
or not you believe this, you use pictures every day - icons, folders,
wastebaskets, and so on - to get at your personal data on your personal
computer. However, as soon as you get onto the library system, it's back
to words, typing in queries, and reading lists of results. Is there any
good reason why personal data is visual and catalog data is textual? This
presentation considers visualization in general, library systems in particular,
and the application of modern Web technologies to the problem.
The Impact of Complexity Science on Science and
Technology Information-Complexity science affects the types of information
stored, the agents used to retrieve information and the way libraries
are organized. Complexity science models computations after natural processes.
The elements modeled may be electron spins, genes, neurons, sand grains
or social insects. The applications range from data mining in a changing
landscape to the construction of autonomous agents roaming the internet.
The Role of Digital Libraries in Scholarly Communication - Digital Libraries have a unique opportunity to support scholarly
communication by actively capturing and preserving the intellectual output
of research communities. Institutional repositories offer a strategic
response to systemic problems in the existing scholarly journal system.
In addition, this approach to scholarly communication increases the institution's
visibility, prestige and public value.
The Scholastica Project: Implementing New Technology
for Visualization Research - Implementing innovative products can
be both exciting and challenging. This presentation will cover how the
Belmont Abby College placed the implementation of VisualNet in the context
the concept of the "Information Commons," as a new model for
service delivery in academic libraries. Properly configured, the Information
Commons can offer an environment where librarians and faculty can collaborate
in the development of knowledge discovery tools to help integrate or bridge
digital and print resources supporting instruction and research. This
presentation will address VisualNet's potential for knowledge discovery
and resource integration
